How to Play with Pokémon Cards: A Beginner's Complete Guide

Whether you've just bought your first Pokémon card pack or rediscovered a childhood collection, learning how to play the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is easier than you might think — and incredibly fun. This guide walks you through everything you need to get started.

What You'll Need to Get Started

Before your first battle, make sure you have:

  • A deck of 60 Pokémon cards (starter decks are perfect for beginners)

  • Damage counters (small tokens or coins to track HP)

  • Condition markers (to track status effects like Poison or Sleep)

  • A coin or dice (for certain card effects)

  • An opponent (a friend, family member, or local game store community)

Understanding the Cards

There are three main types of cards in the Pokémon TCG:

1. Pokémon Cards
These are your fighters. Each card shows the Pokémon's HP, attacks, abilities, weakness, resistance, and retreat cost.

2. Trainer Cards
These include Items, Supporters, and Stadiums that help you draw cards, search your deck, heal Pokémon, and much more.

3. Energy Cards
Pokémon need Energy cards attached to them to use their attacks. Match the energy type to your Pokémon's attack requirements.

Setting Up the Game

Follow these steps to set up your game:

  1. Shuffle your deck and place it face-down as your draw pile.

  2. Draw 7 cards as your starting hand.

  3. Place a Basic Pokémon face-down as your Active Pokémon.

  4. Place up to 5 Basic Pokémon face-down on your Bench.

  5. Set aside 6 Prize Cards face-down — you'll earn one each time you knock out an opponent's Pokémon.

  6. Flip your cards face-up and the game begins!

No Basic Pokémon in hand? Show your opponent, shuffle back, and draw again (your opponent may draw an extra card as a penalty).

How a Turn Works

On each turn, you can do the following in any order:

  • Draw a card from the top of your deck

  • Play Basic Pokémon onto your Bench

  • Evolve Pokémon (if they've been in play for at least one turn)

  • Attach one Energy card to any of your Pokémon

  • Play Trainer cards (Items can be played multiple times; Supporters only once per turn)

  • Retreat your Active Pokémon by paying its Retreat Cost in Energy

  • Use your Active Pokémon's attack — this ends your turn

Winning the Game

There are three ways to win:

  1. Collect all 6 of your Prize Cards by knocking out your opponent's Pokémon.

  2. Your opponent runs out of cards in their deck and can't draw at the start of their turn.

  3. Your opponent has no Pokémon left in play (no Active or Benched Pokémon).

Tips for Beginners

  • Start with a pre-built deck. Theme decks are balanced and ready to play right out of the box.

  • Learn one deck before building your own. Understand how your cards work together before customizing.

  • Know your Pokémon's weakness. A Pokémon with a Fire weakness takes double damage from Fire attacks — positioning matters!

  • Don't neglect your Bench. Keep it filled with Pokémon so you're never left without a fighter.

  • Visit your local game store. Many host beginner nights and Pokémon League events where you can learn from experienced players.

Ready to Play?

The Pokémon TCG is a game of strategy, smart deck-building, and a little bit of luck. Once you understand the basics, every match becomes an exciting duel of wits. Grab a deck, challenge a friend, and let the battle begin!

Want to take your game further? Look into building your own custom deck, exploring different card formats like Standard and Expanded, or joining a local tournament.
